In 2016, Sandy Spring Bank launched “Casual for a Cause.” This program gives employees the opportunity to wear jeans to work for a day in exchange for a voluntary donation to a charity in our community. For over a year now, each month, we have taken a day to give back to the community and contribute to a worthy cause.

Because of the great enthusiasm and broad participation, we are pleased to report that our employees have donated over $30,000 to non-profit organizations across our footprint. Together, we have helped to preserve affordable housing, address pressing health and wellness issues, educate our future leaders, and help those who are less fortunate—right in the communities we serve. Some of our non-profit partners have included the Capital Area Food Bank, the American Heart Association, Rebuilding Together and Junior Achievement of Central Maryland, just to name a few.

The WashingtonFirst Youth Foundation was another organization that we recently supported, which was especially meaningful. In anticipation of our partnership with WashingtonFirst Bank, we joined forces with their employees for a joint Casual for a Cause to benefit their foundation. Together, we helped to raise money to improve the lives of children throughout the Greater Washington, D.C. region. This was also a special opportunity for our organizations to come together and unite our efforts to improve our communities.

And for some, Casual for a Cause can be deeply personal. This was especially the case for Janet Replogle who works in our Legal Department. Janet is a breast cancer survivor, and she was not only able to share her story with employees, but she also had the opportunity to present our employees’ donation to the MedStar Montgomery Health Foundation in support of their Breast Cancer Center.

Why do we do this? Not only is it an opportunity for our employees to band together to make a difference, but it is also a chance to deliver a remarkable experience for our clients. We strive to have relationships with our clients that go beyond day-to-day transactions. We want to enrich people’s lives, and one of the ways we can do that is by supporting some of the exceptional non-profits that truly do make our communities better places to live, work and raise a family. From my perspective, giving back in this way IS the client experience.

I want to thank and commend our employees for their generosity and for making a difference. You are a true representation of the communities we serve. We are excited to continue our Casual for a Cause efforts with the support of our incredible employees.
