Frequently Asked Questions

A new level of security at your fingertips.

New and re-issued debit cards are now enhanced with chip technology. This means your Debit MasterCard® has additional security features and can be used at chip-enabled payment terminals—close to home and around the world.

All existing debit cards will be replaced between October 2015 and March 2016. The timing will be based on the type of card, usage activity and the card expiration date.

Added security

Chip cards contain an embedded microchip for a more secure transaction. As with your current debit card, you will be required to enter your Personal Identification Number (PIN) or sign for transactions at chip-enabled payment terminals.

Global acceptance

Chip technology is already in wide use around the world. This makes traveling internationally with your chip card hassle free. The new debit card provides convenience and because it is “chip enabled”, it provides better security. Plus it provides MasterCard Zero Liability* for any unauthorized transactions. Using the card is safer than carrying cash.
